Independence Day Outreach

Get ready for CTW's Independence Day Outreach! On July 3rd (NOT July 4th) head over to Pacesetter Park in Sylvania, where we will be passing out water bottles and Gospel tracts before watching the Sylvania fireworks. We will congregate near the parking lot by the Sylvania-Metamora entrance at 8 p.m. to begin distributing our water. In order to find a parking spot, it may be a good idea to arrive a while early. Pacesetter Park is located at 8801 Sylvania-Metamora Road, Sylvania, OH 43560. Hope to see you there!

Interim Sunday School Class: Jonathan Edwards & Heart Religion

Beginning on January 3, our interim Sunday school class on Jonathan Edwards will begin. Classes will cover the following topics: 1) Edwards’ Biography; 2) Edwards on Holiness; 3) Edwards on Preaching the Law. Explanation of fourth candle: The fourth candle is the candle of love. With its lighting we remember that "God is love" (1 John 4:16). The love of God for fallen man is ultimately expressed in the sending of His Son to die for man's sin. "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). The candle of love also reminds us that those who love God delight in His law. Jesus said, "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments" (John 14:15). Let us remember that obedience to God's commands is how we may best express our love for Him.

Explanation of third candle: The third candle is the candle of joy. With its lighting we are reminded that, through Jesus Christ and His coming, our mourning is turned to joy. The Magi who followed a star to find Jesus Christ are said to have “rejoiced exceedingly with great joy” (Matt. 2:10). All those who believe in Jesus Christ will one day be rewarded with sinless eternal life. Their voices will praise God, saying, “I will rejoice greatly in the Lord, my soul will exult in my God; for He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness...” (Is. 61:10).

Christ the Word would like to encourage her families to celebrate the season of Advent. Beginning on the 4th Sunday before Christmas (November 29th this year), Advent inaugurates the Christian year and is a time of looking and longing for the arrival of Christmas Day, when we remember the virgin birth of our Lord, the Savior of the World. Moreover, just as Old Testament Christians looked toward the first advent of their Messiah, we now look to our Lord’s bodily return at the second advent.

Each Sunday we will be providing a short devotion for you to use as part of your family worship. The following may be used with or without the traditional Advent wreath, but the candles help remind us that the Light of the world has come to save mankind. Traditionally the wreath has five candles: three purple and one pink candle surrounding a white candle in the middle.

Second Sunday of Advent, December 6

Light 2 purple candles.

Explanation of second candle: The second candle is the candle of peace. With its lighting we are reminded that all men who are outside of Christ are at war with God (Rom. 8:7). Christ, who is called the Prince of Peace by the prophet Isaiah (Is. 9:6), has reconciled us to God by His death. For this reason Ephesians teaches us that “He Himself is our peace,...” (2:14). Though spiritual peace has been won by Christ already, wars still rage upon the earth. When Christ comes again, He will wage the war to end all wars (Rev. 19:11-16). At the conclusion of this decisive battle “there shall no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain” (Rev. 2:14). All will be rest and peace.

Prayer: Merciful God, who sent Your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, on God, now and forever. In Jesus Name we pray. Amen.

Pastor David will briefly summarize key points from his preaching over the last two Sunday evenings, then he and Cheryl and Andrew and Sarah Dionne will join in a discussion on the Biblical foundations of marriage moderated by Matthew Miklovic. Andrew Dionne will lead a class on Paul’s letters to the Thessalonians, covering such topics as sanctification, love, death, the Day of the Lord, and the man of lawlessness. The second class, limited to 30 participants, will work through Doug Wilson’s book Future Men, a how-to book on raising young men. Matt Miklovic and Kevin Zellers will lead this class. Stewardship Sunday School Classes Begin Aug. 30

Beginning, Sunday, August 30th as part of our To A Thousand Generations Campaign, we will begin our 4-week Sunday school lessons on biblical stewardship for children and adults. There will be three adult sections. Jordan Daugherty and Keith Beerbower will be teaching two of the sections and will meet in classrooms in the education wing. Andrew Dionne will teach the third adult section in the sanctuary which will include the senior high. Parents are encouraged to attend with their children, though this section is not limited to parents of high schoolers. Children, pre-school through junior high, will not move up to the next grade level until these stewardship lessons have concluded on Sept. 20th. On Sept. 27, children will begin their new classes. This time of prayer will take place from 6 p.m. on Friday, August 21st to 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 22nd, and will be located on the property at Murd Rd. and Central Ave. This is an opportunity for the church body to come together to pray for its needs, and the specific needs of its individual members. The sign-up board is located in the Narthex. Prayer slots are available throughout the 24 hour period and are divided into one hour segments. We anticipate that the Prayer Vigil will help lay a spiritual foundation for the To a Thousand Generations campaign. Independence Day Outreach

After a one-year hiatus, we’re getting back to our 4th of July evangelistic outreach. Since we’re on the verge of putting down roots just outside of Sylvania, we have decided to distribute water at the Sylvania fireworks display on July 3rd instead of the one in downtown Toledo. We’ll pass out a simple tract which introduces people to both the gospel and our church along with free bottles of ice-cold water. This is a great opportunity to share the gospel, spend time as a church family, and enjoy the fireworks display. Please bring a wagon for carrying water and arrive at Pacesetter Park by 7:30 p.m. Contact Tim Barton if you have any questions or need more information.

The WOW Book Club, Iron 2 Iron, is presently reading Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. Our book discussion will be 7:00 p.m. this Tuesday at Sarah French’s home. See Wendy Foulke for study questions. The second book of the summer, The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment by Jeremiah Burroughs, will be discussed on July 23 at Mary Slick’s home. The final book discussion will be August 18 at Wendy Foulke’s home where we will be discussing Don’t Make Me Count to Three by Ginger Plowman.

LWY Graduation Celebration @ the Brown Home

Great Start to Backyard Bible Clubs, Drees and Holder Clubs Start Tomorrow

Backyard Bible Clubs got off to a great start last week at both the Simpson and Van Wormer homes. This week both the Drees and Holder Backyard Bible clubs begin and will be held during the evening from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.. 2009 Backyard Bible Clubs

It’s that time of year again when several CTW volunteers gather to host Backyard Bible Clubs (BYBCs) throughout the area. Kids ages 4 to sixth grade are invited to join in at any one of the eight Son Rock Kids Camp BYBCs. The clubs are free and center around the Gospel message of Jesus and include exciting stories, fun games, cool crafts, and delicious snacks. Please use this opportunity to invite neighbors, friends, and family as an opportunity to share the joy of the Gospel.

Homeschool Picnic

Our last event of the year is at White Park on Douglas Rd in Lambertville, MI on May 29 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Hot dogs, buns tableservice and ice cream provided. Bring a side dish to pass, your own drinks, lawn chairs and/or picnic blanket. Bring your equipment for organized games such as baseball, soccer and frisbee. Our next Sunday school term will begin on May 17. Two adult classes will be offered this summer. Our main adult Sunday school class will be associated with our Summer of Love and will focus on God’s love for us and our love for God. Additionally, we will be offering a smaller class (limited to 25) that will work through Jim Wilson’s (Doug Wilson’s father) book “How To Be Free From Bitterness.” Please contact Andrew Dionne if you would like to attend this class. Pinewood Derby Kits Available for Pick-up

Pinewood Derby kits and a list of rules regarding size and weight are available for pick-up Sunday morning in the Narthex. The total cost of kits is $3.25. Fathers and their children are welcome to participate in the derby Saturday, May 16th beginning at 2 P.M. at the Dominguez home. All children who enter the derby must be able to do a significant portion of the work in the building of their car. Hope to see you there!

Caution: Narthex Construction

The Seventh Day Adventist church has discovered some major concerns with the tile area in the Narthex region of the building. They will begin a complete removal of the tile over the next several weeks and then replace that same tile and undersurface to correct the problem. Please be cautious as you enter or exit various areas connected to the Narthex area as the surface elevation will increase or decrease depending on whether you are coming or going. There will also likely be various uneven areas of floor during this process. We are warning people to please be cautious so as to avoid any tripping or stumbling in these areas. We hope this is helpful.

From Wednesday, February 25 through Good Friday, April 10, we will have an opportunity to pray outside the Center for Choice located on 22nd Street, Toledo, a place where unborn children are murdered weekly. You may sign up individually or as a group for hour-long blocks from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., 7 days a week, to pray, read scripture and sing hymns. Booklets with scripture and hymns are available in the narthex with the sign-up sheets or upon request. All age groups are encouraged to participate. Begin practicing your triple salchows, arabesques, and your charlotte spirals as we head to Bowling Green University Ice Arena on Friday, March 20, 2009, from noon until 2:00 p.m. for cheap skate. The cost is $3.00/skater and you can bring your own skates or rent them for $2.00. There will be "walkers" available to aid those not able to complete their lutz jumps. Maundy Thursday Thanksgiving Feast

The elders of Christ the Word would like to invite you to our Maundy Thursday celebration. The event will be held at Nazareth Hall and a dinner will be provided. Through fellowshipping and bringing our thanksgiving before Him, we will celebrate the resurrection of Jesus and the joy and hope that He has given to His beloved, the Church. Due to building limitations this event is for the families and singles of Christ the Word only and registration is required. The deadline for registration is Sunday, March 22.
