Ministering to the Morgans

Praise God that Abigail and Mommy have been allowed to return home for a much needed rest. Please pray that all will go well with the upcoming bloodwork and bone marrow biopsy - if the results are favorable the Morgans will then be off to begin the next chapter....the bone marrow transplant at the University of Michigan. It will still be a couple of weeks before this will happen...in the meantime we will continue to minister to their needs - most particularly if you signed up to provide a meal - please do so (call me if you cannot remember and I will also make reminder calls). Just a reminder that Abbie being at home does not open her up for a parade of visitors, especially children and others exposed to communicable disease. It is imperative that Abbie remain "germ free" to ensure that she is ready when it is time for the transplant. We will be keeping you up on their needs as they come about... until then we will all pray that the Lord would heal this precious child.

Volunteer to Write About a CTW Missionary
A good way to learn about a CTW missionary is to read about them, but a great way to get to know them is to contact them yourself and learn first hand from them about their experiences in the mission field and beyond. Then if you want to share what you have discovered with others you are greatly encouraged to write about them. This would enable everyone to know the CTW missionaries better. If you would like more information or this is of interest to you please contact Scott Killy or Michelle Holder.

What's Up with the Thorntons?

The following is from the Jamie and Julia's blog...

Saturday, March 24, 2007

We have been in Kherson one week. It's been a big adjustment for all of us. We are in temporary housing: it's a 2-bedroom apartment on the 7th floor. Yes, the elevator works, though one has to buy an elevator card to make it work. One ride is about 3 cents. We are very grateful for a big grocery store right next to our apartment complex... continue reading here.

Make Easter Story Cookies with Your Family

EASTER STORY COOKIES (to be made the evening before Easter)

You need:
-1 cup whole pecans
-1 tsp. vinegar
-3 egg whites
-pinch of salt
-1 cup sugar
-1 Ziplock bag
-wooden spoon
-tape
-Bible

Preheat oven to 300 degrees.

Place pecans in Ziplock bag and let children beat them with the wooden spoon to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested He was beaten by the Roman soldiers. Read John 19:1-3.

Let each child smell the vinegar. Put one teaspoon vinegar into mixing bowl. Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross He was given vinegar to drink. Read John 19:28-30.

Add egg whites to vinegar. Eggs represent life. Explain that Jesus gave His life to give us life. Read John 10:10-11.

Sprinkle a little salt into each child's hand. Let them taste it and brush the rest into the bowl. Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus' followers, and the bitterness of our own sin. Read Luke 23:27.

So far the ingredients are not very appetizing. Add one cup of sugar. Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know Him and belong to Him. Read Ps 34:8 and John 3:16.

Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12 to 15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed. Explain that the color white represents the purity in God's eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. Read Isa. 1:18 and John 3:1-3.

Fold in the broken nuts. Drop by teaspoons onto wax paper-covered cookie sheet. Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus' body was laid. Read Matt. 27:57-60.

Put the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door and turn the oven off. Give each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door. Explain that Jesus' tomb was sealed. Read Matt. 27:65-66.

Go to bed. Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight. Jesus' followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed. Read John 16:20 and 22.

On Easter morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie. Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. The cookies are hollow! On the first Easter, Jesus' followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. Read Matt. 28:1-9.

Thanks to Many--And a Special Few...

Many in the CTW family have provided loving service to their brothers and sisters in need in recent days. Thank you. Your care for these brothers and sisters is greatly glorifying to God.

I particularly thank Kevin Clark, Matt French, Fred Walls, Andrew Dionne and Kevin Simpson for their care for the Weltin family this week. Your loving commitment is an example to all of us and we commend you for it, brothers.

I also thank those who have cared for the Morgans in recent weeks. God is glorified by your consistent, sacrificial love for those in need.

I further thank the women of CTW who have helped the Gerkens, and those who have cared for the ill of other families of our church in recent days. We know who you are and what you have done, God knows your service, your reward in heaven is real...

Finally, I can't speak enough of the loving commitment of our Caring Committee (Michelle Holder, Sharon Ahrendt, Bianca Altman, Allison Daugherty and Julie Van Wormer) to the needy of our church, and for their efficient and selfless organization of our works of service--and to Mike Vrlenich for forging a diaconate that is committed to bringing glory to God by their works of service in our midst.

The Thorntons Have Arrived!

The following email just arrived in my inbox:
We safely landed in Odessa yesterday. The trip was very good and uneventful. All our bags made it, and though 3 or 4 were over the weight limit, we did not have to pay anything extra. We are still tired and sleepy but it's getting better.

Tomorrow we will leave for Kherson. It's a 4-hour trip, probably close to 5 hours with stops.

We have started a blog to chronicle our life here.

Thank you for all your prayers and support.

Ministering to the Morgans

Praise the Lord! As of today - the CTW Bone Marrow Drive will be post-poned to a later date . This news comes as a result of the National Bone Marrow Registry identifying 6 potential donors for Abbie! (see www.caringbridge.org/visit/abigailmorgan) Please continue to pray for her as she undergoes the chemotherapy and radiation therapy necessary to prepare her for a bone marrow transplant, pray that, of the donors, a perfect match is found, and pray for wisdom for those caring for her .... Praise our Lord for His great gifts!

Ministering to the Morgans

Thank you to everyone who has answered the call to physically assist the Morgans during this trying time. The Caring Committee is especially grateful for all of you who have been willing to make meals, clean at the Morgan Home, watch Ellie and perform the myriad other acts of kindness and friendship. In the days to come, please look to this portion of the CTW website (sub-heading "Ministering to the Morgans") for other ways in which you can assist in ministering to this precious, precious family. In the next few days, more details will become available regarding the Bone Marrow Drive March 18th and 19th. In the meantime, please prayerfully consider having your bone marrow tested as a possible match for Abbie.
