Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.
Take a walk back to the Old Testament to the book of Exodus and visit a famous incident in the life of Moses. In Chapter 3, Moses stands before the burning bush and The Lord Our God speaks directly to him. God tells of His compassion for the Israelites and their plight. He knows they are suffering under the hand of the Egyptians. He states that He will deliver them from this oppression. God needs a earthly spokesman and Moses is the man for the job. “Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” (Exodus 3:13-14 ESV) That was all that was needed to be said. That’s it!
Now fast forward to the New Testament, Jesus makes a similar bold statement in John 8: 58 when he states “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” Jesus was making this confident statement about His deity. He is God and was in existence before Abraham, Moses or Adam. Actually, He has been in existence before the beginning of time. This I AM statement is an attribute of God alone. Jesus was announcing that He was God. Jesus has been, is now and always will be. Jesus is God.
Here are seven more I AM statements found in the Book of John that remind me of Jesus’ deity, care and love for us in all of our lives. Many of these will be expounded upon in other blog posts, but they are worth reading today to be reminded of how much I AM loves and provides for us.
