Divisions. Fractures. Chasms. There is a huge separation between the people of this country I live in. While many seek peace on earth (we’ll hear that even more in this next holiday season), our Scripture today reminds me that this will be impossible outside of Jesus Christ.
For God’s very word is a sword that is sharper than any we’ve ever handled or seen. It’s alive! It cannot be tamed or sanitized, as hard as we may try. While some who don’t know God unite with those who claim Him and, together, they try to reason away God’s word, to redefine words, to study the original language until it says what they want it to say…
…and, the fact of the matter is that this is HIS word, not mine.
There are many who deny Christ and disobey His word blatantly. Others of us love Christ yet struggle in our flesh daily. The difference is one is fighting and the other has given in. You might think you know which is fighting and which has given in…but consider this:
The one who disobeys is the one fighting.
She isn’t fighting her sin, of course, but rather against this glorious living, powerful and sharper-than-any sword. She is fighting against the fact that God’s word discerns her thoughts, her intents. She is fighting against God Himself, who sees all of her denial through disobedience and to Whom she will one day give account.
But, the one who has given in…she has given in to the sword as it plunges through her stony-turned-fleshy heart. She surrenders to the hard words, the culturally-unpopular teachings, the absolute truth and then she does battle with the right thing…herself, the world (James 4:4), and the Accuser of the Brethren (Rev. 12:10).
Friends, will there be peace on earth when we divide so sharply over the truth of God’s word? Peace comes through one Person: Jesus Christ. To be faithful to Him, you will have to say some very unpopular things, it will bring about division, but He is the One we aim to please–not man.
If you want to bring about real peace and real pleasure to your sisters and brothers who speak against the truth of the Word, share Jesus. The Jesus of the Bible, not a made-up image who bows to us, but the One who judges, makes war, has eyes like a flame of fire, has a crown on His head, has a robe dipped in blood, whose very name is The Word of God, whose mouth brings forth a sharp sword that will strike the nations, who rules with an iron rod, who treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of the Almighty God. He is the KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
And may we bow humbly before Him with thanksgiving and praise.
